For the first time ever, Apple had three new big screen phones, iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8. Those three phones started at $ 999, $ 799 and $ 699, respectively.
These flagships have something in common, including the record-breaking A11 bionic processor, dual rear cameras, and wireless charging. But there are also a lot of differences in design, display, and battery life.
Let’s not forget the $ 200 difference between the iPhone 8 Plus and the more expensive iPhone X. Which device is right for you.

Design:
The iPhone 8 Plus is not that ugly, except that the borders above and below the 5.5-inch screen appear obsolete compared to the edge-to-edge 5.8-inch display on the iPhone X.
The iPhone X is smaller and lighter than the iPhone 8 Plus, which measures 5.7 x 2.8 x 0.3 inches and weighs 6.1 ounces while the 8 Plus measures 6.2 x 3.1 x 0.3 inches and weighs 7.1 ounces. Translation: iPhone X easier to use one hand, occupy the pocket space is also smaller.
On the other hand, we like iPhone 8 in three colors (gold, silver and space gray). iPhone X come in only two (silver and gray space). However, iPhone X just looks and feels better.
Winner: iPhone X
Display:
For the LCD monitor, the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus has one of the better panels we’ve seen, but it’s not OLED. The 5.8-inch Super Retina display on the iPhone X offers richer colors, wider viewing angles, and higher brightness.
According to our tests, iPhone X produced more sRGB color gamut, at 128.6%, compared with 122.5% at iPhone 8 Plus. However, the iPhone 8 Plus has slightly better color accuracy with a Delta-E score of 0.25 and an iPhone X of 0.27 (zero is perfect).
iPhone X’s screen is sharper, 2436 x 1125 pixels. The iPhone 8 Plus’s display has a lower resolution of 1920 x 1080.
The iPhone 8 Plus’s screen gives you more room because it has a more traditional and wider 16: 9 aspect ratio compared to 19.5: 9 for iPhone X. This means that the appearance from the movies and web pages to the keyboard is significantly larger. However, the edge-to-edge screen on the iPhone X makes viewing video and playing games more realistic
Winner: iPhone X
Usability:
Due to the lack of home buttons and Touch IDs, iPhone X can understandably introduce new gestures, adding to the learning curve. Even if you have mastered something, you will realize that doing something on the iPhone X takes longer than on the iPhone 8 Plus.
Closing an application as fast as any other application is a simple iPhone X swipe and pressing the Home button on the iPhone 8 Plus. However, switching apps on the iPhone X take more time because you need to swipe up and then simply hold your finger on the screen. With iPhone X, just double-click the home button
Forcing an opt-out application on iPhone X requires more steps than iPhone 8 Plus. You need to press and hold the screen on iPhone X and swipe up on the application to close it; with iPhone 8 Plus, you simply swipe up.
Winner: iPhone 8 Plus
Cameras:
Both the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus offer great image quality because both phones come with dual rear cameras that benefit from Apple’s new, larger, faster sensors while still using the new color Filter. However, while the iPhone 8 Plus has optical image stabilization (OIS) on its wide-angle lens, the iPhone X adds OIS to its telephoto lens for 2X optical zoom.
In addition, the telephoto lens on the iPhone X has a lower aperture (f / 2.4) than the lens on the iPhone 8 Plus (f / 2.8). In other words, iPhone X makes the light brighter when you use the zoom. While both phones in the Empire State Building I shot were enabled for zoom, the iPhone X’s lenses provide better detail and more even exposure.
iPhone X is also more compelling than the iPhone 8 Plus because the iPhone X’s TrueDepth front camera takes portraits in portrait mode and lighting effects such as Studio Light and Contour Light. With the iPhone 8 Plus, you can only take portraits that use the blurred background of the rear camera.
Winner: iPhone X
Performance:
Because iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus have the same processor, you can expect both phones to have the same fast performance. For example, in the Geekbench 4 multicore test, the iPhone 8 scored 10,472 and the iPhone X reached 10,357, so it’s pretty much the same. It is noteworthy that the next generation of the fastest Android phone Galaxy Note 8 only got 6564 points.
When editing videos, iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus are speed demons. Each of the two Apple devices took 42 seconds to transcode 4K video to 1080p. The next generation of the fastest Android phone Pixel 2 took nearly 3 minutes.
Winner: Tie
Battery Life:
iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus last longer than normal phones, but the durability of the 8 Plus is better. The iPhone 8 Plus lasted 11 hours and 16 minutes on Tom’s Guide Battery Test (web browsing with T-Mobile network). iPhone X lasted 10:49.
The average call duration is about 9:40, but we tested some more than 12 hours of phone calls. The iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus both offer fast charging, which can reach 50% capacity in 30 minutes, but you will need to pay an extra $ 70 for the USB-C adapter and USB-C to Lightning cable.
Winner: iPhone 8 Plus
Special function:
The unique feature on the iPhone X is the previous TrueDepth camera, which enables Face ID security, allowing you to log in to your phone simply by looking and swiping up. We found Face IDs to be very reliable, either in the sun or in the dark. According to our tests, Touch ID is slightly faster, but with Face ID, you do not have to worry about getting into your phone when there is debris or sweat on your finger
TrueDepth cameras also support Animoji, animated characters that you can give to your facial movements and sound life. There are 12 options, from unicorns to extraterrestrials, and you can send your short recorded video in a 10-second episode through the messaging app.
The iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus are both water-resistant, fast wired (though you will pay an additional fee) and provide 7.5-watt wireless charging via Qi.
Winner: iPhone X
Champion: iPhone X
Overall WINNER: iPhone X
iPhone X won the race 86-84, won four of eight rounds and scored one. This phone has a more sexy design (fewer borders), more impressive OLED display and more features of the camera. The Face ID is slower than the Touch ID, but the former is more reliable than the fingerprinting and less prone to false negatives.
On the other hand, you should not ignore the iPhone 8 Plus, especially if you want a larger monitor and longer battery life at a lower price. This phone also has no learning curve. But in general, iPhone X is worth the splurge because it just gives you a more feature-rich, forward-looking phone that’s more feature-rich.
